“Make Show-and-Tell Cool Again”: Digital Storytelling

Task #3: Create Digital Story

 

You are now ready to begin the creative process.  In this third task, you will use Windows MovieMaker to import you pictures and create your Digital Story.

 

Option #2: Using Windows Movie Maker

  • Begin by selecting either "Storyboard" view or "Timeline" View - for more editing options, use "Timeline" view

 

 Step #1 – Import Pictures

  • Open Windows Movie Maker
  • Click “Import Pictures” on the task pane and find the “Images” folder where all your picture files are kept
  • Select all the pictures in the folder – you can select all the pictures by holding down the CTRL button while you click on each of the pictures with your mouse
  • The imported pictures are added to your Movie Maker library
  • Drag each of the pictures from your library into the timeline and arrange the order by draging them in the correct position

     

Step #2 – Add Background Music

 

  • Click “Import Music” to add a music file already found on your computer
  • Use Soundsnap.com to find free sound clips or music loops for your digital story.  You can also use The Freesound Project, ccMixter, and FindSounds to download music and sound under the Creative Commons license
  • Any imported sounds are added to your Movie Maker library
  • Drag any of the sounds from your library into the timeline and position the sound to where you want it to begin playing

 

Step #3 – Add video

  • Click “Import Video” to add any video file already found on your computer
  • You can download any video for free use that are covered under the Creative Commons license
  • Any imported videos are added to your Movie Maker library
  • Drag any of the video from your library into the timeline and position the sound to where you want it to begin playing

 

Step #4 – Add Animation and Narration

  • Click on the microphone in the timeline to record your narration – as you record your voice, the preview window will play the video to show you the slide transitions (remember that the narration is recorded as a seperate entity and is not connected directly to the images)
  • Save the Narration to your "Sounds" folder
  • Customize the animation of each image:
  1. Click on Tasks and in the Tasks Pane, select "Edit Movie"
  2. You have two options - "View Video Effects" and "View Video Transitions"
  3. Find the video transitions you want and connect them to an image by draging the transition to the appropriate image
  4. Find the video effect(s) you want and connect them to an image by draging the effect between two images
  5. Experiement with different video effects and video transitions
  6. At any time, you can preview your digital story by clicking on the "Play" buuton on the preview window

 

Step #5 – Save you File into a Video Format

  • Click "File" -> "Save Movie File"
  • Select “My Computerand then "Next"
  • Name your file, change the file name and save the video to your “Completed Videos” folder.
  • Click "Next" two more times and your digital story will be saved to your computer
