Are there places where my students can take and use images, sounds, etc. without infringing copyright?  YES!!

What are Creative Commons Licences? - Published materials covered under shared use licenses. Creative Commons.org

What is the Public Domain? - published materials no longer covered by copyright laws. i.e. LibriVox

Ultimately, even with the TCDSB’s Web Sense firewall software, it is always possible for students to unintentionally come across inappropriate material when on the web.  Educating students on how to handle themselves in these situations is the best way to deal with this issue, not banning students from using the technology!

If students come across inappropriate material, teach them to:

  • Quickly move to a different webpage
  • Not to make a scene
  • Inform the teacher of the incident

* Teachers should never make a scene of unintentional discoveries that are inappropriate.  Simply inform students to be wise for what they are searching for, use prudent words in the keyword searches, and quickly and quietly move away from any inappropriate material that they may access.
