Digital Storytelling Introduction

What is Digital Storytelling?

Using new digital tools to help students tell their own stories in a compelling and emotionally-engaging form. These stories usually takes the form of a relatively short story (less than 8 minutes) and can involve interactivity.  Digital stories can also take the form digital narratives.

- A series of still images or video images combined with a narrated sounttrack to tell a personal strory

- Music tracks are included to add emotion

- Story created using multimedia software organized around the author's own voice

 

 

 

Why Digital Story Telling?

Digital stories derive their power by weaving images, music, narrative and voice together, thereby giving deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences, and insights.

 

- Adds voice and emotioal power to presentations

- Students with limited language skills can communicate their ideas

- An original way of demonstarting knowledge and communicating discoveries aboujt their world

- Engage struggling readers and writers

- Students can publish to a wider audience

In this workshop, you will:

  • Review the TCDSB Acceptable Use Policy and Creative Commons Licenses
  • Manage your projects on your computer through folder organization
  • Search and find photos using Flickr, the online photo sharing website and/or use a digital camera to take one’s own pictures
  • Download and save images to your computer
  • Use Microsoft Photo Story 3 or Windows Movie Maker to import photos, add animations and effects, add narration and background music
  • Edit and present a final product
  • Learn how to upload videos to YouTube in order to celebrate your students’ work
